Buying it for 30-36, as it cost a couple of years ago, is expensive, and 18 thousand is very acceptable. This is a full-fledged iPhone, and not a budget model at all - you can take full advantage of all the nipples of Apple. The performance of the filling from 6S is enough as in 2018, so I think it will be enough in the future. Another question is how soon Apple will stop releasing new firmware for it. On the phone I use only messengers, listen to music, simple applications and very rarely a camera (there is a very good camera available, if I want to take a picture - I take it) - it does not slow down ANYTHING and NEVER. Everything works smoothly and perfectly. 32 GB - more than enough for me. The 16GB version is no longer officially sold, sometimes it can be found at gray dealers. 16 GB is still not enough - do not save 2 thousand rubles.

Minuses: Battery - it's tiny here. With active use, it discharges quite quickly. But it also charges quickly when using a non-native 2A charge. The native adapter charges a little slower. Screen without Force Touch and other bells and whistles, as in older models. It suits me, but who wants more than any cool stuff - take 6S and higher. There is no sophisticated Taptic Engine vibration motor, as in older models, here is the usual vibro. Again decide for yourself. I do not need it, if you really need it - buy 6S and higher. The front camera is weak, fans of overwhelming social networks with their selfies are clearly not suitable. I personally used the front-end only once when I called on Skype, so I am not interested in it. The screen is small, printing on it is not very convenient. Sometimes I have to type texts from a phone with a length of about 1 thousand characters - here I experience some inconvenience. But they are offset by the size of the phone. The first generation fingerprint sensor, they say that in 6S and above it works as much as half a second faster. If every half second of your life is dear to you - in no case do not buy this phone. (in fact, it works very fast here, much faster - it’s not clear)

Comment: While this current model for such money is available, there is simply no point in buying smart shovels on Android. I am completely satisfied. There is an opportunity to buy 7 or 8, but I need a compact phone. Soon, they say, SE2 will be released, but there the price tag will be at least 2 times higher. Even the battery capacity has increased, although the case is the same.

As for the comparison with the Android competitor, everything is not so simple here. In almost all characteristics, Apple devices are lagging behind, but, as we have repeatedly seen, this may not directly affect real performance and other user qualities. So let's proceed directly to testing.

Packaging and equipment

The packaging of the iPhone SE is much closer to the iPhone 6s than to the iPhone 5s. This is evidenced by the general light color scheme, and the picture on the smartphone screen.

Design

Now let's look at the design of the iPhone SE itself. The first emotion when you take it out of the box: my goodness, how small and, at the same time, plump!

In fact, the dimensions of the new items exactly match the iPhone 5s. Up to a millimeter. However, in the two and a half years that have passed since the release of the iPhone 5s, we are already accustomed to a smaller thickness and, of course, to a significantly larger screen. No wonder the same Sony Compact model has a diagonal of 4.6 inches. And the Chinese have already stopped making smartphones less. So four inches look outright atavism.

But this is just the case when the opinion of technologists does not coincide with the opinion of many ordinary users, among which the iPhone 5s is still popular. And let some of them have this for purely financial reasons, while others simply prefer compact models. The iPhone SE is also focused on them.

In fact, there are only three design differences from the iPhone 5s. The first is the new color of Rose Gold. We saw this color in all the latest Apple mobile news, now it is available on a compact smartphone. Girls will certainly be happy. Not only is it beautiful in itself, it also emphasizes that you do not have some old iPhone 5s there, but the most novelty. At the same time, three other color options (golden, dark gray and silver) are also available.

The second design element that has undergone changes compared to the iPhone 5s is the branded apple. Now it is not pressed into the metal of the surface, but is made of glossy metal as an independent unit inserted into the case and slightly recessed - like the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. It looks exquisite, but, in essence, it is such a trifle that can hardly be grasped by the eye, if you do not specifically peer.

Finally, the last detail to help keep iPhone SE from being confused with iPhone 5s is the letters SE right below the word iPhone on the back of the device. However, obviously, this in no way affects the perception of design. Otherwise, smartphones are absolutely identical: the material, the location and shape of the buttons, connectors - all exactly like the iPhone 5s. As a plus, we note that although the camera is much better here, it does not protrude above the case (as is the case with all iPhones with a six in the name).

An interesting question is which version of the Touch ID fingerprint scanner is installed in the smartphone. As we recall, the new version of the scanner, which works more quickly and accurately, debuted in the iPhone 6s / 6s Plus. The owners of these models know that it is enough just to quickly touch a finger and immediately pull it away so that the smartphone can recognize the owner. Since Apple does not provide details about the version of Touch ID in the iPhone SE, we checked it with a simple comparison - at the same time we pressed the Home button on the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE. The result is unequivocal: the fingerprint scanner in the iPhone SE is slower. That is, apparently, here it is the same as in the iPhone 5s.

In general, the design of the iPhone SE can be called a time-tested classic (although it looks somewhat archaic against the background of modern devices, even the middle segment). Two cosmetic innovations - a new color and a differently executed logo - do not affect the overall impression. In terms of appearance in front of us is just the iPhone 5s. No more and no less, no better and no worse.

Screen

The iPhone SE screen parameters do not differ from those of the iPhone 5s: 4-inch diagonal, IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1136 × 640. By modern standards, it is very small: both the diagonal and the resolution (less than 720p is difficult to find even in the mid-budget segment).

It is also important that the iPhone SE screen does not support 3D Touch technology.

However, the technical characteristics and the presence or absence of additional technologies are just the tip of the iceberg. A comprehensive examination of the iPhone SE screen quality was carried out by the editor of the Projectors and TV section Alexei Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is resistant to scratches. The screen of the Apple iPhone SE is slightly darker (brightness in photos is 104 compared to 110 for Nexus 7). The doubling of the reflected objects in the screen of the Apple iPhone SE is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better under conditions of strong external illumination, but repairing them in the case of a cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, but still not better than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than with ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and when displaying a white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 610 cd / m², the minimum - 6 cd / m² The maximum brightness is very high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be ensured. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (located to the left of the front speaker). In automatic mode, when the external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider - the user can try to set the desired brightness level for the current conditions, but what brightness will be in other conditions and just when changing and returning the ambient light level, we cannot predict. If you do not touch anything, then in complete darkness the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 6 cd / m² (too dark), in an office lit by artificial light (about 400 lux), the brightness increases to 100-140 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (corresponds to illumination on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) is set to 500 cd / m² (this is enough). We were more satisfied with the option obtained after several attempts to correct the brightness in various conditions, while for the three conditions indicated above we got 8, 115 and 600 cd / m². It turns out that the automatic brightness adjustment function works more or less adequately, and there is some opportunity to adjust the nature of the brightness change to the user's requirements, although there are not obvious features in its work. At any brightness level, there is no significant modulation of the backlight, so there is no screen flicker (or rather, at the minimum brightness there are very narrow peaks with a frequency of 50 Hz, but flicker still could not be noticed even with great effort).

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting colors. For comparison, here are photos in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the Apple iPhone SE and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to approximately 200 cd / m² (full-screen across the white field, on the Apple iPhone SE it corresponds to 60% brightness using third-party programs), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. A white field is perpendicular to the screens:

We note a good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And the test picture:

The color balance varies slightly, the color saturation is normal. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level. And the white field:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Apple iPhone SE, the brightness drop is slightly less. The black field with a diagonal deviation is weakly highlighted and acquires a light red-violet hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 760: 1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 20 ms (11 ms on + 9 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and vice versa in total takes 25 ms. Constructed at 32 points with an equal interval in the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage in either highlights or shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 1.93, which is below the standard value of 2.2, so the image is slightly highlighted. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

Apparently, the matrix filters mix components to each other to a moderate degree. Spectra confirm this:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. In this case, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since there the color balance does not matter much, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Like in, iPhone SE has a feature Night shift, which makes the picture warmer at night (how much warmer the user indicates). The graphs above show the values \u200b\u200bobtained at the average position of the parameter slider Color temperature (by the way, right - “color temperature”), when shifted all the way to Warmer and to Colder (schedules are signed in the appropriate way). In any case, when you are entertaining with a mobile device at night, it’s better to lower the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and then, to calm your own paranoia, turn the screen yellow Night shift.

To summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a summer sunny day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is acceptable to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, high black stability to deviation of gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen, good black field uniformity, as well as sRGB color gamut and good color balance. There are no significant shortcomings. At the moment, this is perhaps the best display among smartphones with a small screen.

Performance and heating

iPhone SE runs on the same Apple A9 SoC as the iPhone 6s. And this means that there is also an Apple M9 coprocessor, which provides support for the voice unlock function (the command "Hello, Siri!").

It is important that the CPU frequency in the iPhone SE is not reduced. We outlined the details of SoC in an article about the iPhone 6s, so we won’t repeat it and go straight to testing. In addition to the main character of the test, we included the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 5s in the table, since our main tasks are to understand whether there are any differences in the performance of the iPhone SE compared to other smartphones on the Apple A9, and also how much faster is the new product than iPhone 5s. As for the comparison with Android competitors, as we previously found out, the Apple A9 is still the leader, so there is simply no point in such a comparison with the iPhone SE.

Let's start with the browser tests: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark and JetStream. Everywhere we used the Safari browser.

The result is predictable: we see the approximate parity of the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s Plus, as well as a huge superiority (three to four times) over the iPhone 5s. We emphasize that different versions of operating systems and browsers could give some error, so the small difference between the two smartphones on the Apple A9 should not be confusing.

Now let's see how iPhone SE will appear in Geekbench 3 and AnTuTu 6 - multi-platform bechmark. Alas, we have no results for the iPhone 5s, because at the time when we were testing it, AnTuTu did not support iOS at all, and Geekbench was available in the previous version. Therefore, you will have to be content with the results of the latest smartphones.

Here is a more strange result: the small but still present superiority of the iPhone SE over the iPhone 6s Plus in Geekbench, as well as, on the contrary, the lag in AnTuTu attracts attention.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench Metal (in the case of iPhone 5s, the results are from a simple GFXBench) and Basemark Metal.

Recall that the Offscreen tests are the output to the screen of a picture in 1080p, regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests are the output of the picture in the resolution that corresponds to the screen resolution of the device. That is, Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of SoC abstract performance, and Onscreen tests are indicative of game comfort on a specific device.

As we can see, even the most demanding 3D scenes do not cause any difficulties for the iPhone SE. Here, of course, the matter is not only in SoC, but also in the low resolution of the screen. Hence the difference with the iPhone 6s Plus in Onscreen modes. Curiously, in Offscreen mode, the larger model is slightly superior to the compact beginner. But the user does not care. The main thing for him is that any games on the iPhone SE will just fly.

Next test: 3DMark. Here we are interested in the subtests Sling Shot Extreme and Ice Storm Unlimited.

Quite strange looks the significant superiority of the iPhone 6s Plus over the iPhone SE in the most difficult test Sling Shot Extreme. It would be logical to assume that the GPU of a cheaper iPhone runs at a reduced frequency. And this looks like a logical decision, since with a significantly lower screen resolution, the load on the GPU becomes lower.

Finally - Basemark Metal.

And here is a similar picture, strengthening us in the above assumption. Although the iPhone SE has a more capacious battery than the iPhone 5s, but still it is inferior to the iPhone 6s and, especially, 6s Plus.

Like the iPhone 6s Plus, the SE comes with a 5-watt charger. Such low power for a large model would be problematic, but for a small-capacity battery it is enough. The charge time of SE from 0 to 100% is 1 h 40 min.

Screen

The display provides the greatest advantages of the model, but not because of its characteristics. It is important to note that Apple rarely uses displays with a contrast ratio of 800: 1, but if you put the phone side by side with modern IPS-matrices of smartphones such as the iPhone 6 and LG G4, the black color looks like a dark gray.

The phone screen accurately reproduces shades of gray. As usual, a blue shift is observed, but it is small, and the average color temperature is below 7000 K. Image quality

According to reviews, iPhone SE 32GB allows you to get good photos. They are noticeably sharper than frames taken at 5s, due to a combination of a higher resolution sensor and improved image processor. As expected, due to the same camera and ISP, the image quality is essentially the same as that of 6s and is definitely the best among phones cheaper than $ 400.

Night shots are identical to those of the 6s. But the price of the iPhone SE 32GB is $ 250 lower. The Android world has long abandoned smartphones with a diagonal of 4 ".
