Visually, the tablet is not much different from the previous model. The gadget is made in the corporate identity of Sony - modern, strict, ascetic. Very solid, "adult", so to speak, exterior. The key feature of the new product is to reduce the already small dimensions. The Z2 Tablet has become thinner by half a millimeter: 6.4 versus 6.9 mm from its predecessor. In addition, the tablet took off 55 grams: from 495 to 440 g. And the version without the built-in modem weighs only 425 grams! Agree, excellent features for a full-sized tablet. The gadget does not take up much space in the bag, fits in many additional sections and hardly weighs down luggage.

No keys appeared on the front of the tablet - all buttons, as usual, are touch-sensitive. The side frames around the display are a little too big - I would like them to be a little narrower. The connector for the wired headset is brought to the lower end, which is why when watching a movie you have to turn the device upside down, because it is decidedly impossible to lean it, for example, to the table with the headphones connected. Frankly, not the best design decision.

Next to them is the MHL interface, combining video output and microUSB 3.0, and an infrared port for controlling household appliances. But Sony fans will still be very happy, that's for sure!

The company claims that this is the thinnest and lightest water-protected tablet on the market - well, the “most-most” war is on the market all the time, and no one forbids coming up with new categories. However, words were words, but when I first picked up the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2, I was surprised that the device is really weightless, dimensions are 172 x 266 x 6.4 mm, weight - 426 grams for the version with Wi-Fi, the model with Wi- Fi + LTE weighs 439 grams. Almost the entire front panel is occupied by the display, although the frames are wide - apparently this is a reckoning for the minimum thickness of the device. The back is made of matte black plastic, the traces are very noticeable, there is a white version, I would recommend buying it. The whole thing is in prints, on the white case they are invisible. At the end there is a power button, the same as that of smartphones, made of aluminum. Under the plugs are microUSB connectors (MHL supported), a slot for memory cards and SIM cards (microSIM) in the version with LTE. A 3.5 mm jack without a plug, apparently, a new five-pin connector is also used here. At the back is the camera lens, there is no flash, under the lens is the NFC area. On the case are both an infrared port for controlling home appliances and a magnetic connector, I recommend immediately buying somewhere such a cradle.

I want to note that after the appearance of iPad Air, a new bar was set for all manufacturers, first of all, we are talking about weight - Sony took up this indicator for a reason. The only question is, for whom can this be important? Probably, for those who often carry their equipment in a bag, they are used to saving every hundred grams - it is difficult to imagine such a person, but who knows, maybe such consumers exist.

In addition, Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is protected from water (complies with IP55 / 58 standards), can withstand immersion in a bath or sea. In Japan, the cult of the bathroom, the desire to receive such protection is understandable. In Russia, the situation is different, so protecting the tablet is not a serious marketing advantage - all this is just my subjective opinion. But what is an advantage is the appearance of the device. If you don’t like Samsung, then among Android tablets there’s nothing more to see - in the sense that I am very, very pleased to see Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 personally.

The tablet bends a little, consider this moment when you carry the device in a bag with other things. Lightness really matters, I was pleased to use the Tablet Z2 just because of this indicator, I don’t feel it in the backpack, either in the hand, but from the first minutes of use I want to hide the tablet in a case.

Two speakers are used here, they are located on the sides of the display, I can’t call the volume exorbitant - you can watch a movie in comfort, listen to music, there is a stereo effect. It seemed to me that the volume is higher than that of the tablet of the first generation. By the way, you can watch AVI without conversion, there is support for such files by default.

Display

It uses the TRILUMINOS IPS display, the same technology as in the Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone (I recommend watching the video, there it is described in more or less detail). The room looks good, good viewing angles, brightness. The diagonal is 10.1 inches, resolution - 1920 x 1200 pixels. There are no films on the front and back, at least I was not able to consider. Tempered glass protects the display from scratches and does not need films, I have been talking about this for a long time.

The unusual aspect ratio of the display also affects the perception of the tablet, one friend asked a question - is this a new photo frame? Indeed, the Tablet Z2 is very much like a photo frame. The display is well suited for watching movies, photos, working with sites - for example, layouts in WordPress. The viewing angles are not bad, but white is slightly yellow, and using the white balance setting can not be fixed. Moreover, sometimes the screen turns yellow, and sometimes it seems pinkish.

In the video, I say that the Tablet Z2 has the same display as the iPad Air, I did not mean the actual data (for Air it is 9.7 inches, for the Tablet Z2 10.1 inches), but for the whole perception. LTE is supported, and judging by the words of colleagues, this tablet can work like a smartphone, you can make a call and send a message if you wish. Installed 16 or 32 GB of memory, supported and memory cards with a capacity of up to 64 GB, not bad for those who want to watch video on the tablet, the benefit of the display for this.

Of the features - exit from sleep mode by double tap on the display is supported, there are own wallpapers and themes, many icons are redrawn, the notification menu looks different, it opens on one and the other side: on the one side of the notification, on the other - access to quick settings. Among the applications there are a number of additional ones, such as Evernote, a “Sketch” for drawing with a stylus, Social Live, Track ID and so on, you can look at the screenshots. There is also a program for remote control of equipment, it works, but I usually do not use such software - why?

So far, three modifications are sold with unpronounceable names, such as SGP511RU, two versions with Wi-Fi (16 and 32 GB), a model with Wi-Fi + LTE with only 16 GB of memory. Two colors, black and white, in terms of functionality and characteristics, a headset is included with the LTE tablet, with the rest there is only a power supply and a USB cable. In my opinion, you can buy anything, especially if you have a smartphone with LTE support. No one bothers to turn on the Sony Xperia Z2 as an access point, connect the Tablet Z2 and do everything you need to do on the big screen.

I’ll also tell you about accessories, again a bunch of various additions, this is a Bluetooth speaker with a stand, a stand with a remote control for watching movies, a clip-on keyboard - a BKC-50 case.

You can connect the controller from the PS3 to the tablet, this is said separately - also an interesting feature, but why not connect the joystick from the PS4? Here, work with accessories for the new 3.5 mm jack is also supported; these are headphones with noise reduction implemented on the device side, and the STM-10 microphone. In reality, the tablet behaves approximately like an iPad Air, but subjectively discharges faster. Alas, the tablet is charged for a long time from the complete PSU, about five hours, it is better to use a magnetic docking station, charging time is reduced by thirty percent (subjective opinion, there was a prototype on the test).

Camera

The main camera is 8.1 MP, the proprietary Exmor RS module is used, HDR mode is supported. The front camera is 2.2 MP. Many functions from the cameras of Sony Xperia smartphones are used, some can be seen in the video. In particular, these are the effects of augmented reality, a fairy tale, science fiction and others, I like them from the time of Sony Xperia Z1.
